Trip Overview

Lower Dolpo trekking provides an opportunity to explore the remote valley of Nepal where the people are so untouched from the outer world that most of them don't even understand the national language. Their culture is so unspoiled that the visitors will find it totally unique from other parts of Nepal. But still, the locals are so humble, helpful, and happy despite living in high poverty status. Most of all, they know how to smile in such a hard lifestyle.

Itinerary


Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu.

Welcome to Kathmandu. You will be received by one of our office representatives at the TIA exit section and escort you to your hotel afterward.

Depending on your arrival time, you will have the chance to stroll around the places nearby your hotel on your own.

Day 02: Permits preparation and trip briefing day.

Today you will have a free day in Kathmandu while your specialist will take time to arrange permits for your trek. You will have time to explore around the Kathmandu valley on your own or enjoy the Cultural Day Tour with an experienced tour guide arranged by Trek Guiders.

In the evening, you will be met by your specialist in your hotel lobby. S/he will introduce you to your guide for the trek and brief you shortly about your trek, things to do/ not to do, and any optional activities you may enjoy during the trip. You can ask any queries or share feelings with your specialist during the briefing.

Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj.

Depending on your flight time, your guide will pick you up from your hotel for drive to the domestic airport terminal. After an hour flight, you will reach Nepalgunj, from where the next flight to Dolpa will be operated next morning.

Nepalgunj is an interesting town that showcases the diverse culture of Nepal. Here you can explore the local market, mini-zoo and nearby villages if you are not willing to have rest for next day.

Day 04: Fly from Nepalgunj to Juphal (2320m). Trek to Dunai (2140m).

After breakfast, transfer to Nepalgunj airport and take an approximately 45 minutes flight to Juphal, Dolpo. This small town is located on the foothills of Himalayas with beautiful views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri to its north. You will meet your trek staffs at Juphal and start trekking downhill for around an hour and then through the terraced fields of the Bheri river and narrow gorge for around 2 - 3 hours before you reach the village of Dunai, which is the administrative headquarter of the Dolpo region. After some time rest, you can explore this village and visit local hospital of this area.

Day 05: Trek from Dunai to Tarakot (2543m)

Today's trail continues along the southern bank of the Bheri River heading upstream on an easy trail. Passing through several deep gorges, suspension bridges, isolated villages, and pine trees lush forest, you will reach Tarakot where you will be greeted by colorful terraced field.

Tarakot is an old fortress town built by the local people as Dzong or fort. Tarakot was a capital before the Gorkha dynasty ruled in Nepal. The famed Sandul Gompa lies farther east from Tarakot and the junction of Barbung khola and Tarup Chu (river). The village stands on a hillock to the south of Bheri River which at one time supervised collection of tolls for the trading caravans.

Day 06: Trek from Tarakot to Laini (3160m)

After breakfast at Tarakot, start walking alongside the Tarap Chu river. Crossing the same river twice on the suspension bridge you will reach a junction where the Barbung River and Tarap Chu River meet. Here you will get to see one of the famous monasteries named Sandul Gompa. After resting for sometime, continue walking ascending and descending the trail that passes through the terraced farms via some beautiful villages before reaching Laini.

Day 07: Trek from Laini to Nawarpani (3545m)

After your early morning breakfast, start your footsteps towards Nawarpani, your next destination for today. You will continue following the Tarap River climbing on a steep trail made of stones and jumping off the narrow gorges from one side to another side making your trip really fun and adventurous. In some places, you can see that the trail gets absent where you will need to make your own way by using some logs or stones to make it work as a bridge. With several climbs and descends with adventure, you will reach the bank of the Chyugur River from where you will reach Nawarpani.

 

Day 08: Trek from Nawarpani to Dho Tarap (4080m)

Today's trail starts with a gradual ascend to Kamattarka where the two rivers, Tarap Chu and Lang Khola meets. After few more hours of hiking, you will cross a narrow gorge from where the trail leads above the tree lines of Juniper bushes and wild roses. Walking further for few more hours will take you to the village of Dho surrounded by a stone wall.

Dho Tarap is the world’s highest human settlement at 4,080 meters and is a junction where the trail leading to Jomsom, Mustang, and Tibet emerge.  The houses of Dho Tarap are designed as per traditional architecture and hence have a larger living space underground with small portion peeking above the ground surface. The natives of Dho Tarap are simple and kind as they are truly God-fearing persons unknown of changes in the other parts of the world. Truly visiting Dho Tarap is like traveling to a primeval era.

Day 09: Restday at Dho Tarap.

Today is a mandatory rest day planned to get properly acclimatized before you do your first high pass crossing. You can either choose to have rest and relax the whole day or take a chance to get acquainted with the local culture by meeting and interacting with local people. Since, the Dolpo area is hard to access, needs a good trip planning, and of course a bit expensive trip in comparison to other treks, not much tourists visit these areas frequently. Some locals might have hardly seen westerners for ages. Hence, it's good to make some local friends here. During rest of the free time, you can visit the Bon Gompa, which is about half an hour walk further from the village.

Day 10: Trek from Dho Tarap to Numa La base camp (4440m)

After enjoying a hearty breakfast at Dho Tarap, begin your journey towards Numa La BC. On the trail, while walking through the valley, you will see green grass covered lands on both sides of the Tarap Chu river which is really mesmerizing and unique to the inner Dolpo area. This trail will first lead you to the Tokyu valley where you can see the monastery of Chiba group. After exploring the monastery and village for few minutes, continue walking up the valley on a rough trail before reaching Numa La Base Camp.

Day 11: Trek Numa la BC to Palung Tang (4465m) via Numa La pass (5318m).

Today is going to be your biggest and toughest day of the whole trip. After breakfast at Numa La BC, start climbing a steep trail to the top ridge of Numa La. Reaching the top of the pass offers you a fantastic view of the surrounding landscapes and barren mountains of Dolpo up to the north face of massif Mt. Dhaulagiri. After a glorious moment at the pass, walk downhill up to Palung Tang where you will be resting for overnight.

Day 12: Trek from Palung Tang to Dajok Tang (4080m) via Baga la pass (5190m)

Yet another challenging day of the trek begins after your breakfast at Palungtang. Start the trip with a steep climb up to the top of Baga la. The climb is relatively difficult but the rewards achieved after completing the climb and reaching the top is mind-blowing. You can enjoy the beautiful view of surrounding landscapes and snow-capped peaks of Kanjirowa Mountain range. After spending some time at the top, walk down for around 3 hours to reach Dajok Tang.

Day 13: Trek from Dajok Tang to Ringmo (3600m)

Today's trail starts descending through the Pine forest for around 2 hours. On leaving the forest behind, you will see the noticeable changes in the land and vegetations. Passing through the pasture fields and alpine shrubs most of the way, you will reach Ringmo village which is a traditional Tibetan village of the Dolpo region.

Day 14: Restday at Ringmo. Day hike to Phoksundo Lake (3612m)

Today's day is planned as a free day to allow you plenty of time to explore the deepest lake of the nation, Phoksundo Lake with a depth of 145m. On the trail, you can see the yak caravans moving in and out of Ringmo mostly towards the Tibetan borders on the remote mountain trail. On the way to the lake, take some time to visit a nearby monastery too. Return back to Ringmo for overnight after exploring the lake.

Day 15: Trek from Ringmo to Shyanta (2520m)

After breakfast at Ringmo, descend downhill to Chepka from where the trail follows a massive overhanging rock. This area is popular for many medicinal minerals which are believed to be the cure for most of the diseases. Passing by some lovely small local villages, you will reach Shyanta for overnight.

Day 16: Trek from Shyanta to Juphal (2320m).

Today is the last day of your trekking in Lower Dolpo region. After enjoying breakfast, you will walk the uphill through the meadows and pass a few houses to the small hotel at Kala Gaura. Walking down from atop a ridge, taking utmost caution, you will reach Juphal. The rest of the day is free to explore the market town or just relax.

Day 17: Fly from Juphal to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu.

Taking the earliest flight from Juphal, you will land at Nepalgunj first and then directly to Kathmandu from Nepalgunj on the next available flight. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you will be picked up by one of our office representatives and transferred to your Kathmandu hotel. The rest of the time is free for you to do some last minute shopping or just relax enjoying food in the best eateries in Kathmandu.

Day 18: Depart Kathmandu.

You will be picked up from your hotel 3.5 hours prior to your international flight time by one of our office representatives to escort you to the TIA. Trip concludes !!

Commencing this trip

The trip starts with an hour domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and the next day early morning 45 minutes flight will take you to Juphal Airport of Dolpa. The trail leads through some beautiful villages and deep gorges including the crossing of high passes of the areas before reaching Phoksundo lake, the center of attraction of Lower Dolpo region. You will return back to Juphal via Shyanta for the flight back to Nepalgunj and ultimately to Kathmandu.

Best time to do this trip

To make the most out of your trip in Lower Dolpo Area, it is highly sugested to plan out your trip during spring (March to May) or autumn (September - November). Winter will be harsh in these areas making it difficult to walk and camp. The flights to Juphal can also get affected due to unfavorable weather conditions.
