Elephant Day Camp

Trip Overview

Elephant Day Camp is the activity offered by Tiger Tops which allows you to get close to the elephants without harming and exploiting them. In fact, you will get to live with them, experience them and their behavior and prepare Kuchi - favorite food of Elephants.

Itinerary


Day 01: Fly from Kathmandu to Bharatpur. Drive to Tiger Tops elephant camp.

Depending on your flight time, you will be transferred to the domestic airport terminal by one of the Trek Guider's representatives for a flight to Bharatpur. Upon reaching Bharatpur, you will be picked up by Tiger Tops representative who will directly escort you to the Elephant Camp, which is located at the edge of Chitwan National Park, adjacent to Tharu Lodge, the property of Tiger Tops. Here, you will be provided with a short briefing about your activities in the camp and proceed for lunch afterward. You will be introduced with the in-house elephants and their mahouts.

In the late afternoon, take a walk with the elephants to the river to see them drink and bath. Enjoy the time taking pictures and chatting with the naturalist who can tell you everything about local culture and customs. Return back to your camp for evening dinner and overnight.

Day 02: Day with elephants.

Waking up early in the morning, you will follow the elephants to the grasslands, where the mahouts cut and collect the grass for the elephants to eat during the day. Depending on the different season, this experience may vary. The morning times are often misty that gives a magnificent view of elephants walking through the grass. Enjoying a hot cup of tea, feel free to chat with your naturalist about the local wildlife and ecosystem. Optionally, you can also learn the grass cutting and binding technique from mahouts, if you are interested.

Upon returning to the camp, you will get to enjoy the breakfast and rest of the morning, you can watch mahouts preparing Kuchis (Elephant Sandwich) and also learn to make it. Lunch will be served around noon and you can take some rest and relaxation with the elephants in the hot midday hours.

In the late afternoon, when the weather is pleasant, move out with the elephants and their mahouts for a walk in the jungle. Walking side by side to the elephants, you can watch their movements, their communication methods with other elephants, and eating behavior while free in the jungle. You will most likely encounter tiger tracks, deer, various bird species, and rhino too, depending on the route followed.

Day 03: Fly back to Kathmandu.

Wake up early morning today for a short jeep safari in the jungle. You will be met by your naturalist and drive into the national park buffer zone. Exploring the jungle in vintage land rover, your naturalist will explain the jungle in detail along with his experience in this field. You may encounter various wildlife like deer, birds, monkeys, endangered one horned rhino, and elusive Royal Bengal Tiger if you are lucky enough.

Returning back to the camp, enjoy the hearty breakfast and start preparing for the drive to the Bharatpur airport. Upon reaching Kathmandu, Trek Guider's representative will be waiting for you at the domestic airport terminal to pick you up and escort you to your hotel in Kathmandu. Trip concludes !!
